At Vileda, we’re incredibly proud of our community on social media, who provide us with helpful tips, tricks and hacks for making the most out of their cleans.
We have collated some of the best handy hints from our social media community.
The thing we love about cleaning is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it – everyone does it differently, but in a way that works for them.
Most people don’t like the monotony of repetitive cleaning, or the time it takes to do a backlog of built-up cleaning tasks. For this, Emma Jayne – self-confessed ‘mummy to a small army’ – says that her go-to cleaning routine is doing “a quick 5 minutes in each room every day to make sure you stay on top of everything”, whilst still setting aside days for a comprehensive, deep clean.
Fellow parent Mrs K says her trick is getting her children involved in the cleaning – “Even something as small as putting their own dishes in the dishwasher or bringing the clothes in from the line”. Likewise, family man Tom Kirby treats cleaning time as family time, “vacuuming, sweeping and polishing with the children”.
Remember – more hands equals less cleaning time, so round up as many hands (big or small) as you can!
The first step to getting (and staying) motivated to clean? Changing your mindset. If you think cleaning is a chore, it will feel tedious. Likewise, if you have in your mind you’re not going to enjoy this, you’re more likely not to enjoy it when you do start.
However, following these quick, easy steps are great starting points to help you demystify your clean
If you’re someone who struggles to find motivation, avid ‘Hincher’ Lee‘s hack is to “always keep a mop and cleaning caddy with all the essentials on both floors of the house so they are accessible near every room”. This way, when motivation strikes, you’re never more than a few steps away from your cleaning kit and can get cracking immediately!
Once you’re in the cleaning mindset, Instagram user Christine Shelley’s tip for success is “a little dust and polish every day”, while busy mum of 3 Gaynor likes to “clean as I’m going along”, with her top tip being washing up and cleaning the surfaces straight after cooking; that way, they’re not going to be forgotten.
Dividing tasks into small, manageable chunks makes cleaning the house seem much less daunting and, with the right tools, can be both fun and rewarding.
Cleaning influencer Carly, founder of the successful Instagram account Carlyshomeideas, “can only do housework to music”, which is not only a great way to keep you entertained when cleaning but also a great way to keep you energised and motivated along the way.
However, the fun doesn’t have to stop there – many social media followers include little extras in their cleaning routine that keeps the fun going. Busy mum of 4 Anna Brown says the key for her is “sticking on some music and having a boogie and singalong at the same time 💃”.
Similarly, Tesersa Tolliday is also motivated by music, but she likes having “a beautiful scent permeating through the air” at the same time. Maybe a spritz of your favourite air freshener or the smell of some fresh baking would be a good scent to keep you going. Or, if you like breathing in some good, clean, fresh air, why not “open the windows to let the fresh air in when you clean”, like Instagrammer Hilm’s Khan. Nothing gets us ready for a deep clean like some cold fresh air!
One bonus tip that gets Instagrammer Caroline Smith even more excited to have a little cleaning fun? “Getting some new cleaning products and tools”! (And let’s be honest: who doesn’t get excited on new mop/cleaning tool day?)
Now you’re motivated and have got your favourite motivational music on, next you need to plan what you are going to clean and how best to clean it.
If decluttering is the aim of the game, Instagrammer Nicola Turner cleans with three bags handy – “one for the bin, one for the charity shop, and one to sort out later!”
If giving your home a thorough once-over is your cleaning mission, start from the top and work your way down. Give everything an in-depth dusting from top to bottom, starting with things like light shades, shelving units and picture frames. Then, when all the dust particles have settled on the floor, now it’s time to mop ‘til you drop!
Did you know that a range of our microfibre mops can remove over 99% of household bacteria, just using water? These Vileda mop heads are made with microfibres, which consist of millions of tiny synthetic fibres. While you mop your floor, all of these tiny fibres loosen the dirt and physically pick it up – also removing over 99% of bacteria without the use of harsh cleaning chemicals.
Rest assured that our 1-2 Spray Mop, Microfibre and Power Mop, Ultramax Flat Mop, Turbo Spin Mop and Twist Mop have all been scientifically proven to remove over 99% of bacteria with just water, but if you want the lovely smell and added protection that comes with your favourite disinfectants, why not add some to your mopping water.
If you like a natural yet thorough clean, why not try our Steam Mop, which kills 99.9% of bacteria without the use of chemicals.
Once you have done your cleaning, you’re nearly finished!
After congratulating yourself on a job well done, our penultimate tip is prepping your cleaning equipment so they’re ready for next time. That means cleaning your cloths and washing your mop heads if they are looking particularly worse for wear. Crafty Instagrammer ‘CraftsfromtheValley’ always preps her Vileda Turbo Mop by washing her mop heads, which she says “wash perfectly in the washing machine”.
All you need to do is detach the mop head from the handle and pop it in the washing machine at up to 40 degrees. You can also wash most Vileda mop heads in the washing machine, such as the 1-2 Spray Mop pad which last for up to 200 washes!
An extra tip from us? Don’t use fabric softener when washing your mop heads or pads, as it negatively affects the microfibres even after just one wash as it coats the microfibre and makes it thicker, meaning it won’t clean into all those minuscule nooks and crannies as effectively.
Then the final tip – Have a treat on-hand as a reward! Vileda fan Jackie Roberts says her failsafe is “saving a treat to look forward to as a reward for doing chores, maybe a cake or a sit down with my fave TV show”.
And there you have it – a few of our favourite cleaning tips! Now it’s time to relax and survey your handiwork!
