Vileda Blog How to Keep Your Home Clean and Fresh as a Pet Owner

From muddy footprints trailed in from outside, to finding hair in EVERY possible crevice - If you share your home with a furry friend you will know the daily struggles of keeping your house clean.

Here at Vileda, we have a range of products that help to make cleaning up after pets quick and easy, so we've put together a handy guide to keep your pet-friendly home looking and feeling fresh.

Don’t forget to dry your pet after a bath or walk

Keeping your dogs (or cats!) smelling fresh is one of the simplest and most obvious ways to keep your home odour-free. But, be careful, washing your pet and then allowing them to air dry may leave your home smelling like a wet dog.

After you've showered them, or returned from a rainy walk, make sure to dry them as quickly as possible with an extremely absorbent pet towel.

Keep your Vileda 1-2 Spray Mop handy to absorb any excess water from the floor, and scrub away muddy footprints. Cleaning these up straight-away means the mud is less likely to be spread throughout your home. As the microfibre mop head removes over 99% of bacteria when you just add water*, there’s also no need to use chemicals.

Remove odours – don’t just cover them up

Although candles and air fresheners may make your home smell lovely at first, they don’t actually eliminate undesirable odours. In fact, they merely conceal them. Keeping an air purifier in the living room and kitchen will help to eradicate the bad odours your pet could be releasing.

Clean all your pet necessities regularly

Making sure your pet's necessities are cleaned on a regular basis is an important step to prevent unwanted odours from accumulating. This involves cleaning fabric toys and bedding in the washing machine, scrubbing their food bowls, and sanitising their toys.

Keep your pet well-groomed

Prevention is better than a cure! Whether you take them to the groomers, or use a grooming tool at home, keeping on top of your pet’s hair care routine is much easier than trying to remove hair from soft furnishings later. Cat hair and dog hair is difficult to remove from clothing, couches and floors, so find ways to prevent moulting as much as possible.

If you do need to remove pet hair from your furniture, a lint roller, a vacuum and some rubber gloves will be your best friends. Using rubber gloves to remove pet hair from your couch or carpet is easy, simply pop on your rubber gloves (try Marigold Extra-Life Kitchen Gloves for the best results!) and run your hand over the areas that need cleaning. Static electricity caused by the friction will mean the hair will clump together, making it easier to be discarded - it’s as easy as that!

To reduce the amount of hair leftover in your furry friend’s favourite spot, designate a blanket and pillow for them. These items can then go straight into the washing machine on a weekly basis.

If you have wooden or laminate floors, pet hairs can easily disperse into corners or under furniture. Sweeping up pet hair and dust couldn’t be easier with the Vileda Duactiva Anti-Dust Broom, with the combination of its special bristles and no-dust foam section, the broom collects all kinds of hair and particles in one sweep - even on uneven surfaces.

Maintain their litter box or cage

Your pet’s toilet is a hot spot for harbouring bad smells. The RSPCA states for cats, you should spot clean their litter box whenever you notice a deposit. For hamsters and bunnies, you can leave it a little longer and do a full clear out of the cage or hutch once a week. For fish, you should look to clean the tank every two weeks.

Cleaning your pet’s toilet areas can be a messy job, so keep your Vileda 3Action Broom nearby to quickly sweep up any spills. The powerful broom head catches any dirt particles quickly and reliably without them getting stuck. An organic fibre composition makes the cleaning of the broom quick and easy, perfect for hygienic cleaning.

Open windows to let in fresh air

Opening your windows to let fresh air in should not be underestimated! In winter, the last thing you want to do is open your windows, BUT, we promise you that letting some fresh air for a short period every day will allow air to flow throughout your home and help improve the overall freshness. Your house will thank you!

Deep clean your home

Whilst we know you clean your home as regularly as possible - there are times when a deep clean is needed! This is your opportunity to pay special attention to any areas where your pets spend time. Washing the sofa cushions, vacuuming the furniture, and even cleaning the walls your pet likes to sleep against should all be part of this.

Extra tips for those deep cleaning days

Now you have the basic guide on keeping your pet and your home clean, we want to help you go that extra mile on deep cleaning days.

You never truly know what your little friends get up to when they’re left to their own devices. You may not be surprised to come home to a chewed up toy or a couch full of hair, but a spot that may not catch your eye is your windows!

It sucks up all the water, without leaving behind streaks, within mere seconds. The electric vacuum also cleans 120 windows with just one charge.

For those deep cleaning days, the Vileda Steam Mop heats up in 15 seconds and cleans your floors quickly, whilst killing 99.9% of bacteria with just water.**

It’s a given that you will wash your furry companion in the bath or shower after a muddy winter walk or on a hot summer day to cool them down. But, the aftermath of bath time can be a chore to clean up.

The Vileda 2in1 Dustpan and Brush Set is perfect for collecting any dried-up mud on the bathroom floor. To go the extra mile whilst deep cleaning, try the Vileda Windomatic Power Vacuum for Windows on your shower screen to remove excess condensation.
